Students In Liberia Fail University Admission Exams En Masse!

As 404's head back to their final term in high school, one cannot help but feel sorry for their Liberian counterparts. It would appear that high school leavers in LB (that's the acronym for Liberia, like the way we have TZ or UG...) failed their version of KCSE en masse! Yaani, hata student mmoja hakupita
In a press statement released by UL (The University of Liberia) on August 21, 2013 the University said, no students out rightly earned the scores of 50% in math and 70% in English a requirement set by University of Liberia Faculty Senate as the passing scores for the undergraduate entrance examinations. No candidate who sat for the graduate programs, Law School and School of Pharmacy Exams earned the scores of 70% also set by the UL senate as a threshold to pass, the release said. "Holding these results constant, no candidate would have otherwise been admitted to the University for Academic 2013/ 2014 in the above programs," the released added.
However, in response to this massive failure, the Student Representative to the Student Council, Alhadji Kromah, says he sees recent entrance examination results of the University of Liberia as frustrating and disappointing because the University allowed only two persons to correct the exam paper.
"You cannot have two persons correcting over 23,000 papers in less than one month," Kromah said. He blames the massive failures on a 'zero-entry' policy aimed at reducing the number of students enrolling into UL, "you cannot create an impression here like Liberian students are not learning anything just to reduce the enrollment," Kromah said.
Whatever the case, we're wishing the Class of '13 all the best in their forthcoming exams and we believe that we will not witness any such failure. We're also praying that the GoK doesn't come up with a 'zero-entry' policy of its own.

Bye Bye Hannah Montana

For those who grew up watching Hannah Montana in their early teen years, Mily Cyrus' performance at the recent MTV Music Video Awards will be a really rude shock. Before we break it down for you, check out how Will Smith and his family reacted to her performance...

Anyway, back to Miley Cyrus and her controversial performance at the MTV VMA's.
Cyrus performed her summer hit "We Can't Stop" before Robin Thicke joined her onstage for a special rendition of "Blurred Line." The onstage party seemed to perplex audience members, especially after Cyrus stripped off her teddy-bear onesie to reveal a nude-colored bikini.
Looks like we have a new case of good girl gone completely rotten. You be the judge...

Could Big Name Kenyan Celebs Be Soon ‘Coming Out’?

With the recent ‘coming out’ announcement of Prison Break TV series heartthrob, Wentworth Miller, it seems like in Hollywood, gay is the new black. Just a few months ago, Zoe Saldana kinda intimated that she might be batting for CORD (sorry, the opposition) once in a while. Anyway, whether it's in a blog post or on the cover of a national magazine, a celebrity coming out of the closet is always big news and also hugely profitable.
Frank Ocean came out through a song and he instantly solidified himself as a mega superstar. And with Nairobi becoming ever more liberal (from a moral perspective), a lot of people theorize that a big name Kenyan celeb might just come out…soon. And no, I am not talking about the characters whose greatest achievement is announcing that they are gay. I mean like a bonafide star with a couple of hits and a large following of either male or female fans coming out of the closet and shocking the world…..my astrologer is predicting that this will happen before 2013 is over. Who do you think it will be?

He is one of SA's biggest dance artists and he's going to be performing live in Nairobi this September. We're talking about Professor & he's headlining 6 AM's Earthdance on September 14th, 2013.

The event has moved back to the Ngong Race Course venue, after a brief sojourn in Kajiado last year.  Earthdance also received a major reprieve earlier last month when it was confirmed that one of the world's biggest dance festivals, Sensation, had cancelled their event slated for Nairobi in the same month.

Please remember that this event will be strictly 21+

Chivalry is Still Alive: High School Boys in China Use their Shadows to Shade Girls from Sun

Read full story here: http://www.chinasmack.com/2013/pictures/schoolboys-use-their-shadows-to-shade-girls-from-hot-sun.html

At the scene of military training for new students, the sun was scorching. A boy suddenly heard a girl’s request: “May I stand in your shadow?”
Soon, a “shade of human shadows” formed by 5 boys appeared, with over 20 boys in this class subsequently joining them…
First lesson of the school year: Boys ought to take care of girls
This story happened at Zhengzhou No.19 High School. The head teacher says: ”The boys did very well. They’re normally quite naughty, but at critical moments exhibit a sense of responsibility.”
Tomorrow, will you think of those who shielded you from the sun yesterday?
Yesterday, the high school portion of Zhengzhou City No.19 Middle School conducted the new student military training performance, where the students brightly and bravely completed their first high school experience.
However for the first year boys and girls of class 10, their first experience of high school was not only the military training, but also the “human shadow shade” the boys formed for the girls.

Top 8 series' to heat up your August holz

We know that y’all love your series’ and most of the time you got nothing to do during the August holz. So we at The Insyder have decided to hook you up with the latest and sickest series of this year. From drama to action to comedy these are series that everyone can relate to and enjoy no matter what. Let’s begin:

1. Scandal-if you have not watched this series, we do not know which planet you’re living on. This series is about this hot mama called Olivia Pope who is a lawyer who helps fix people’s problems and yet she has an affair with the president of the USA. Drama unfolds itself and the truth slowly comes out. People start to suspect their relationship, and therefore the president has to present himself as an honest man to the world forcing him to control his love and desire for Olivia Pope so that his reputation can be maintained.

 2. Love and Hip hop ATL- This is reality show is set in Atlanta, and this series covers the day to day lives of upcoming artists and producers. Apart from that it shows their personal difficulties they face in life as well as their nightlife and good assets they possess. This series is just so addictive in that you are able to understand more about the celeb industry and the pros and cons of being in the limelight.

 3. Game of thrones- set in a world torn between actual medieval times and someone’s imagination. Game of thrones or “Thrones” as it is fondly called by its followers, is a complex but highly addictive series about 7 different characters pursuit of the throne. While it is filled with action and romance, the strongest and most endearing thing about this series is the characters and a very strong cast of actors who perfectly portray them.

4. Suits – This is a series is about a smart college dropout who gets the opportunity to work for a top corporate lawyer even though he lacks a law degree. This series becomes more interesting in that he ends up succeeding in this field however, some employees that he works with start to doubt that he has a degree which is a crime as his job requires him to be a law student.

5. Revolution – This series is absolutely amazing in the fact that it shows how the world is suffering without electricity 15 years later. Therefore with no electricity the things we use for our daily lives do not work such as phones, televisions, laptops, fridges... Basically anything electronics does not work. Therefore the world is left at a crisis and certain individuals end up fighting for power by creating electricity and finding out how the world became a blackout zone. This series becomes eye catching as one is able to see what happens to the world and the suspense and excitement increases as in each episode the lights slowly come on but suddenly go out. So from here one will have so many questions… Is someone controlling the lights? Can the world come back to where it was? Does this mean power? Therefore for all these questions to answered one has to constantly follow up on each episode

6. Orange is the New Black"Orange is the New Black" reveals the weird economic world of the prison commissary. This series is about a woman imprisoned for transporting drug money. From here we see the challenges she faces as being a newbie in prison and also we are able to see her past and how she got herself into where she is now.

7. Vampire Diaries – This series follows the life of a teen girl who goes through high school and gets a vampire boyfriend and their relationship with each other becomes increasingly difficult as the brother of her vampire boyfriend comes to town and unveils his brother’s secrets and his past life which has a lot of drama and scandal creating havoc and distraction in their relationship. This series just keeps you on your toes as the tension builds and the hunger of human blood rises as more and more vampires come to the town where the brothers live.

8. Devious Maids - Devious Maids centers on a close-knit group of maids bonded by their jobs, struggles & their melodramatic employers. The chemistry between the maids and their respective bosses is incredible. In the show, the maids get to know the world of the rich and famous from Beverly Hills and also their secrets. It is suspenseful and dramatic and keeps you wanting more and more. And although it is full of drama there is a lot of comedy that will keep you laughing and interested in watching the show.

Emmy Kosgei set to wed at the end of this month

Emmy Kosgei has been causing quite a buzz for the past month, ever since she announced her engagement to Nigerian pastor, Anselm Madubuko. While Nigerians bashed her on twitter for her looks, Kenyans have been on her case saying that she is after the man's wealth. He is after all a tycoon and has allegedly bought her a prado and a house in Kileleshwa. The fact that he lost his wife of over 20 years about a year ago, has three children and is significantly older than her doesn't make matters any easier. The two are set to wed at the end of this month. Emmy is seemingly in love and in a happy place, and we can only wish the 'Taunet nelel' hit-maket all the best.

US Government Couldn't Stop This Teen Tech Hacker!

Ex Bomerian, Martha Chumo is a 19-year-old teenpreneur who wants to change the world. Last year, she got a computer to herself for the first time at an internship, and "learning to code became my obsession," she writes. She quit her job, bought her own laptop, and plunged into the process that is happening to smart, self-motivated people all over the planet in 2013: She started learning to code.

She became a moderator on Codecademy, pulled in almost 1000 followers from all over the world on Twitter, made the "Dean’s List" on tech learning community Treehouse, racked up 187 contributions on Github. She found a community IRL too--started practicing at the Nairobi iHub coworking/incubator space, landed a job as a developer with a local Ruby on Rails shop, and taught and mentored other aspiring coders.

A couple of months ago she ran a successful campaign on Indiegogo, raising almost $6,000 to fund a summer trip to Hacker School, the New York City-based boot camp for web developers, and AdaCamp SF, a conference dedicated to women in open technology and culture. But the US Consulate denied her visa. Officials helpfully explained that since she’s not currently enrolled in college and is a legal adult with no husband or kids, there’s too much of a risk that she’ll stay in the States.

If you’re thinking that this denial got Chumo down, you’d be wrong. A few days ago, she launched her second Indiegogo project: this time, she’s looking for $50,000 to start her own school for developers right here in Nairobi.
"I’m ineligible to go to New York for Hacker School, but I am not ineligible to learn and become a better programmer! So I am starting a dev school in Nairobi to give myself and numerous young East Africans a chance to learn, improve their programming skills, and build awesome technology for Africa."
There is a lot of inspiring stuff here, to be sure. One nagging question is whether the US did the right thing in keeping Chumo out of the country. The tech industry here is agitating for more open immigration policies, and Chumo seems like the exact type of person we want. Besides,
freedom to travel is an important right and its denial is obnoxious. But African brain drain is a real issue too--it’s been estimated to cost the continent $4 billion a year. While it’s obviously the US’s loss, by denying Chumo a visa, our government seems to have ensured that a talented, hardworking person will stay put and build something in her own community.

Lion in China Turns Out To Be A Dog

Visitors at a zoo in China were left feeling played when the zoo tried to convince them that a Tibetan mastiff dog was a lion.
A woman identified only as Liu was at the zoo in Louhe with her son when they saw a cage labeled "African lion." Then, the "lion" barked. Lions don't bark. This "lion" was actually a Tibetan mastiff dog. According to CNN, Liu said: "The zoo is absolutely trying to cheat us. They are trying to disguise dogs as lions."
This revealed that other cages were mislabeled, such as a dog in a wolf cage—which is far more believable, but still unforgivable because of the deceit—and a white fox placed in the leopard enclosure. So now dogs are cats? Liu Suya, head of the park animal department, explained this strange practice to CNN. The Tibetan mastiff was placed in a lion's cage over "safety concerns," and the lion and leopard were removed for breeding purposes. How now?
Which brings us to the moral of the story; if the Chinese can tell the difference between a lion and a dog, then they sure as h**l should be able to know that elephants tusks don't add pumping power to the engine down below. Save our elephants!...oops, this story is about dogs  lions...ni how??

NGWERTY GENERATION ON THE LOOSE

What is the definition of sex to teens? Has it become very casual that it’s included in the ‘getting
to know each other ’ stage of a relationship? Are they using protection? Does the person they are having sex with matter? At what age do they start having sex? Shocking revelations were made by the I-QRU, guys are out there Gerring it in, Hammering, Banging,Chopping, Romping, Smashingand worse still kuna wale wana Rombosa na Kunyanduana without a thought about STD’s and unwanted pregnancies. This is because contraceptive are the last thing they think about during  this ‘funtimes’.
VIRGINITY
Gone are the days when one would be caught dead saying that they have lost their virginity before they got married. A lady would be honored for getting married as a virgin and her wearing that sparkling white dress was very relevant.
Well, should we say that these days a lady might as well get married in a purple dress? Virginity is now seen as a burden to teens. Why would you still be a virgin at the ‘old age’ of 14? Sex is explored by teens at this tender age and has slowly become a right of passage into most of the popular crews in school. For the guys, a dude gets more bragging rights if he has tapped more than one chic.  He is seen as the Lord of the game and ironically he also becomes popular with the ladies. This is because the other chilles are now very curious to know what exactly he does to have managed to ‘Score’the rest.  Therefore, more fall into his smash list and his cool points increase.
For the ladies, they will only tell their close friends whom they lost it to, when and how it was. A lady would not reveal how many peeps she has been smashed by as this will make them get labeled as too generous.
HOW DO THEY VIEW SEX?
The Score Sheet
How many peeps have you tapped?  Because then you earn yourself more cool points and bragging rights as the king or queen of the game. This  unfortunately is very important to teens, they value their cool points and would do anything to make sure they are on top of this ‘score sheet’. The pressure to be with the popular crowd forces one to indulge in these un-informed practices. They get the worst advice from friends as of course one would not go to their parents on how to increase their cool points through under age sex. Yes, these teens know very well that what they are getting into is not meant for them, well at least at their age but hey, who wants to be unpopular in their teen years. So Y.O.L.O they say and they become ‘professionals’ at their tender age. One of the teens we spoke to, revealed to us that by the time they were in 304, almost half the class had lost their virginity and 50% of them had already started while in 204.
 PROTECTION
Teens are more afraid of getting pregnant than getting an STD. They argue that one can live with the STD or get treated and go back to their normal life.  With pregnancy, both parties are responsible and it’s a lifetime job taking care of the child. One will have a lot of responsibility; his and her lives are practically over. There will be no more hanging out with your peeps and random plot; one has to think about the child first. They say with an STD, one can still go out, hang out with guys and still be in school. Better still, one can go to hospital and get it taken care of. They are therefore abusing the morning after pill forgetting about its side effects.
They further say that it is very difficult for them to go and buy condoms as they are usually put at a very open place and thus they are shy to get them. Some of them have no idea of how to use them, and since they do not want to look lame in front of their partners, they will not ask and end up having sex without protection with the hope of using morning after pill to prevent the unwanted pregnancy.
PARTNERS
Well of course it is a bit special if you have sexual relations with your boy friend and girl friend, but this is not a necessity to teens. A partner to them is a guy or chille who wants some just as much as you want it. ‘No strings attached ‘, ‘Friends with Benefits’ and ‘Tap Buddy’ are some of the names they call their partners. This is the guy or chille you always call whenever you want some; you do not have to have anything in common or even like each other. Your relationship is based on sex only.
They do not really care about each other, apart from the time they are meeting and where. In case where the chic gets pregnant, the guy has nothing to do with it coz honestly he is not sure whether he was her only tap buddy. So she is left to deal with it alone and that of course marks the end of the sex relations and the guy is off to the next one.

Sonko Exposes Child Porn Syndicate!

A Nairobi businesswoman has been charged in a case involving three diplomats working at the United Nations after police found her in possession of photos of naked underage girls.

Peris Ngina Opwora appeared in court charged with unlawfully inducing more than 30 underage girls to expose their private parts for use in pornographic materials, The Star reports.

The woman was arrested after Nairobi Senator Mike Mbuvi Sonko, who is assisting police with the investigations, exposed the syndicate with over 30 girls aged between 15 and 18, said to have been induced into indecent sexual act.

Much ado about Kemboi

Ezekiel Kemboi once again made Kenya proud yesterday when he won his third 3000m Steeplechase world title in Moscow, Russia. Check out this vest with which Kemboi dedicated his win to President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto...

The now famous vest soon inspired this meme...

Then there was this one, which is now doing rounds on social media, about Kemboi's response when a reporter asked him about his new hair-do...

...and as usual, in true showmanship, was his trademark dance. Forget the Azonto, the Antennae and even the Ojode...we are on that Kemboi dance tip!

Kenyan King of Rap- Octopizzo Vs Rabbit

You cannot talk of heavyweights in the Kenyan music industry without mentioning Octopizzo and Rabbit. No doubt that they are both massively talented artists with various hit singles under their belts...but who exactly takes the crown between the two?
The  last video Octo dropped was to the song “Stay  so fly”, and you can check out his usual impressive wordplay here Octopizzo- Stay so fly

Rabbit released an eleven minute remix to his song “Ligi Soo” featuring various artists, which made everyone forget that Octopizzo had chucked a video just two months earlier. Octo took to twitter to say that ‘a certain artist’ had been out-done in his own track. Although he later came out to deny it, this was obviously a jab at Kaka Sungura…because no other Kenyan artist had released a remix at that time, and Kendrick Lamar was yet to take over Big Sean’s “Control”. Well, watch "Ligi Soo", which is still enjoying massive airplay here Rabbit- Ligi Soo remix

After listening to “Ligi Soo”…would it be safe to say that Rabbit has edged out Octo and is the current reigning king??
